Film Forum in New York is running a Billy Wilder series this week. One of my top favorite films, ever, is his Sunset Boulevard. Thanks to my friend’s invitation to see One, Two, Three, I have a new favorite Wilder film.
I thought I’d already seen it on TV many years ago and wasn’t expecting such an entertaining film. I expected a technicolor film starring James Cagney and Jim Hutton. I got one out of three - I thought we were seeing Walk, Don’t Run, a different 1960s film with a different aging star from Hollywood’s golden age, Cary Grant. That was set in 1964 Tokyo, this is set at the Coca Cola headquarters in 1961 Berlin, adjacent to East Berlin, and filmed in black and white.
It’s just wonderful - well-written, very funny, Cagney’s rapid-fire dialogue delivery master class, Arlene Francis’ dry verbal shots, the jabs at the Soviets, jabs at former Nazis, the self-referential bits, mostly concerning Cagney’s gangster stereotype. I did wonder at the ages of Cagney (62) and Francis (54) as parents of two preteen children but a minor quibble.
A favorite line from Cagney’s character to his wife when she suggested moving to Coca Cola corporate headquarters in Atlanta: “Atlanta? That’s Siberia with mint juleps!”
The guy hanging out of the car in the third photo is a painter who needed to paint a fake coat of arms on the car while it raced through Berlin’s streets toward the airport. One of those silly running gags that tickled me. It runs one more time this week.
